10 Knives You Can Pry With

We’ve heard it a million times. A knife should never ever be used for prying. If there were a 10 Commandments of Knives, “Thou shalt not pry with your knife” would be number one.

So why do so many people insist on using their knives to pry open cans or boxes when they know it could result in this? We usually have a knife on us and it’s just so convenient.

Fortunately, for every problems, there is a solution. You could simply not pry (but what’s the fun in that?), buy a separate mini pry bar, or pick up a knife that’s built to pry.

Unless you want to carry yet another tool as part of your EDC, I’d opt for a pry bar knife.

If you think pry knives don’t exist, you’re missing out on a whole world of possibilities. Here’s a list of 10 knives with pry bars.

1. KA-BAR BK3 Becker Tac Tool

For all intents and purpose, the BK3 Tac Tool is a sharpened pry bar. This collaboration between Ethan Becker of Becker Knife & Tool and John Benner of Tactical Defense Institute features a wicked 7-inch blade with a blunt tip and a flat, one-sided grind. It has partial serrations on the edge and a hook cutter on the spine.

This blade is 0.250 inches thick and can be used for prying, hammering, cutting, and smashing. This knife is designed to take a beating, which is why you don’t have to feel guilty when you use it to pry open a door.

2. Boker Pry-Mate

Next up is a knife with a punny name: the Boker Pry-Mate. This robust knife is designed with an eye toward prying. The blade is nearly 7mm thick—thicker than the Tac Tool—but only 3.38 inches long. The blade is made from N690BO stainless steel. This is an Austrian steel made especially for Boker with a focus on performance and durability. That’s a must if you’re going to be using it to pry lids off paint cans.

Sometimes the only thing standing between life and death is luck.

Back on July 29, 2014, Charles Devowe drove from Michigan into Canada en route to a fishing trip in Ontario. He noticed debris on the road, including some strewn at a 45-degree angle.

He traveled for about two miles up the road until he decided to turn around. After parking near the debris, he saw a Pontiac Vibe flipped upside down in a creek at the bottom of a hill. Since Devowe has bad knees, he didn’t want to immediately go down because no one would know they were there.

So he flagged down some passersby and then headed down the hill with no regard for his bad knees.

Yellow is the color of energy, optimism, and hope. That’s why it’s no surprise so many rescue knives feature yellow handles (well, that and yellow is highly visible).

Spyderco Ladybug 3 Salt

First up on the list of yellow knives is the Spyderco Ladybug 3 Salt. If you’re into knives with yellow handles, then Spyderco is your brand. Spyderco features dozens of knives with yellow handles. All the knives with H1 stainless steel in the Salt Series come in yellow handle scales.

This Ladybug 3 Salt has a 1.94-inch blade with the Round Hole. Made from truly stainless H1 steel, the Salt Series is designed to be used on the high seas or anywhere else you’d find moist and corrosive environments. The yellow handle is made from bi-directional FRN.

Old Timer 34OTY Middleman

Next up is a classic slipjoint knife. This Old Timer Middleman is a traditional stockman model with a clip, sheepsfoot, and pen blade. The handle is yellow Delrin, making it a recognizable Old Timer. The nickel silver bolsters surrounding the handle material makes it pop even more.

Case Cutlery Yellow TrapperLock

Like Spyderco, Case has a ton of knives with yellow handles, but since we already had a traditional stockman on the list, we thought the Case TrapperLock was a great knife to highlight. This single-bladed folder features yellow handle scales with nickel silver bolsters and brass pins. An engraved thumb stud adds some extra awesomeness to the clip point blade.

“They come in handy, I guess. Monday night really proved it,” Moody said.

That’s a quote from a 44-year-old logger from Maine named Leo Moody describing pocket knives.

Not long ago, Moody was driving home from work when he saw an SUV flipped upside down in the water. He called 911 and rushed to the vehicle where one of the passengers said there was a baby trapped in the back seat.

As only a special type of person would do, Moody immediately swam through the cold water to the vehicle where he saw the 3-month-old stuck in the child seat.

At this point, the average person would be helpless and incapable of ripping a jammed seat belt with bare hands. Fortunately, Moody is not your average person. He pulled out a pocket knife and began cutting away.
