Top Knives Designed by Ethan Becker

If the name Ethan Becker doesn’t ring a bell in your head, you’ve been missing out.

Becker, who is a knife designer and an amazing cook, founded Becker Knife & Tool in the early ’80s, after he spent years designing unique outdoor equipment like the durable Becker Patrol Pack. Although BK&T shut its operations, Becker himself kept designing knives.

Fortunately, KA-BAR picked up Becker’s creations, including some pretty cool new designs. Here are some of the best Becker knives:

Becker Tac Tool

This Becker Tac Tool is more than a knife. This tool can cut like a knife, pry like a crowbar, shatter glass like a hammer and anything else you might need in an emergency.

Becker Tac Machax

One of the most well-known Becker tools is the Tac Machax. This tactical machete will blow your mind. Even though the handle looks uncomfortable, it feels great in your hands even after hours of use.

Best Kukri Machetes from Knife Depot

Similar to how some African countries, especially a place like Ghana, use a machete as an everyday tool for basic tasks, the Nepalese people also use their own version of a machete for everyday tasks: the kukri.

Resembling a machete in nearly every aspect, the main different between the two is that the kukri has a blade that curves inward, so it looks like a boomerang.

The kukri has been historically used as both a weapon and an everyday utility tool. It’s great for clearing brush, chopping wood, skinning animals and, of course, self-defense. That’s why kukris make such great camping companions.

If you’re interested in picking one of these up, here are some of the best ones from Knife Depot.

Cold Steel Knives PVC

This Cold Steel Kukri features a 13-inch blade and comes with a cordura sheath.

Smith & Wesson Bush Hog Kukri

This S&W has a 12-inch plain edge blade and a rubber handle, which is comfortable on your hands during repeated use.

Best 9/11 Commemorative Knives

Earlier this week, we all took an opportunity to reflect on the tragic events that took place 11 years ago. It’s impossible to take those images out of your head.Nor should you try. It’s important to remember.

And to honor those who perished that day and those who were affected with the loss of a family member or friend, knife companies have created numerous commemorative knives. Here is a compilation of some of those knives.

KA-BAR 9/11 Commemorative Series

In the years following 9/11, KA-BAR has created three commemorative 9/11 knives. One the the Marine Corps, another for the Army and a final one for the Navy.

Boker 9/11 “Justice is Done”

For nearly 10 years, the US pursued the perpetrator behind the attacks until he was finally killed in May of 2011. To simultaneously remember 9/11 and honor the sense of closure, Boker created the 9/11 “Justice is Done” knife with those words etched into it.

Gil Hibben’s Knives Featured in the ‘Expendables 2’

The Expendables 2, the star-studded, action-packed, shoot ’em up film of the year, won the box office a week ago and received pretty favorable reviews from critics.

While you may be most familiar with the huge stars of the film, including Sylvester Stallone, Chuck Norris, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Jet Li to name a few, another group of players in the film deserve a spotlight: the knives.

Knifemaker Gil Hibben created knives for the movie in order to give the film more attitude. Hibben’s bowie knife from the first Expendables movie was one of the most memorable aspects. You can even get a replica of the famous knife.

Here are the knives from the sequel taken from Hibben’s website.

Thin Knives You Can Carry in Your Wallet

It’s the item most people grab when they’re heading out the door because it contains money, credit cards, drivers license, identification and… a knife.

While many people don’t keep a knife tucked away in their wallet, those who do claim it’s a great way to never forget your knife when you quickly step out the door.

Knives are made specifically for a lot of activities, whether it’s fishing, hunting, parachuting, opening boxes and more. However, sometimes you just need a small knife to open an envelope or slice a stray string. That’s why some manufacturers make knives small enough to fit into your wallet.

If you’re interested in picking up a small knife for your wallet, here are some of the best choices.

Iain Sinclair CardSharp2

This unique knife with a clever design is probably the perfect knife for a wallet. It folds up into the size of a credit card, so it can easily slip into the pockets of a wallet. It’s only 2.2mm thick, but it features a blade with a 65mm cutting edge.

Great knives to give moms for Mother’s Day

If you think all a mother wants for Mother’s Day is an apron or a mop, you’re completely wrong.

A lot of mothers out there want something that’s practical, special and has a little bit of you in it. That’s why there’s nothing better than getting your mom a knife (for reasons why mothers would want a knife, check out this column from Tracy Morrow). Here are some great knife models to get that knife-loving mother in your family (be it a mom, sister, aunt or grandmother).

Leatherman Pink Style CS

Show your mom you care about her and mothers all over the world by giving her a pink Breast Cancer Awareness Leatherman. Not only does a portion of the sale go toward the National Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation, but your mother can proudly display this pink tool. Leathermans are a really good gift for mothers because they are multifunctional. These are all-around tools that will help her make her day easier.

CKRT Shrimp – Designed by Gerry McGinnis

The Shrimp by CKRT is a charming little knife, which comes in a variety of bright colors. It makes such a great gift for a number of reasons. First, it’s small enough to fit on a keychain, so she doesn’t have to worry about lugging it around. Second, it’s a very simple knife, which makes it good for a wide range of uses.

RAT Pink Izula

While the two previous ones are more general purpose knives any mom could use, the Izula is best for an adventurous and spry mom. This is a great survival knife that’s smaller than some of the other survival knives, but it can also be used for daily tasks, including opening packages, cutting twine and more.

Chef’s knife

Although it’s probably not what you had in mind when thinking about knives, a chef’s knife is a great way to show the moms in your life you care. A chef’s knife is something most people use every day. A personalized knife, such as the one from Ergo Chef above, could be that thoughtful gift your mother loves and cherishes.

Five best-selling SOG knives and tools

SOG Specialty Knives has the reputation of being a company associated with quality and innovation (If you’ve ever owned an SOG knife, you undoubtedly agree). They even received #2 on Steve Shackleford’s Top 11 knife promoters list from Blade Mag for their use of R. Lee “The Gunny” Ermey as a representative.

However, reading a profile of SOG and its founder, Spencer Frazer, at the Herald Net website made me feel stronger about the direction of the company and its storied history.

So, in honor of SOG, we’re looking at the top five best-selling products of SOG, according to the article.

SEAL Pup

The lowdown on the hottest Gerber knives

The Cutting Edge recently sat down with Spencer Worley, who manages Southwest Gerber Knives of Carlsbad, New Mexico, to chat about the difference between a combat knife and a tactical knife, wilderness saws, and some of the hottest Gerber products he’s selling at the moment.  Check it out.

What are some of the most popular knives you’re offering this year?

I would probably say the LHR Combat knives are our most popular.  These knives are made in the U.S. and are basic combat knives with big, serrated blades. For a hundred bucks, it’s a great knife.

Gerber LHR

There’s also the Gerber Contrast, which Gerber did a heck of a job designing. It has a really cool outward appearance, a nice blade, an 8-inch stainless steel handle and a frame lock, which is a bit stronger than your average knife.

For those who aren’t sure, what’s the difference between a combat knife and a tactical knife?

A combat knife, I would say, is a knife that you can use in a hand to hand combat situation, the blade would be a tanto style for thrusting, more of a drop point blade, that’s more of a combat style.

The tactical knife would be more on the stronger side and you have a lot more knife.  The LMF II is a good combat knife that comes with a nice sheath and has about ten and a half inch, sturdy blade,  It can cut through Plexiglass or aluminum, it can cut through the fuselage of an airplane if you need it.  It’s a knife that a soldier would carry

What are some of your favorite multi-tools?

The ones that stand out the most are the suspension multiplier, its lightwieght,  only nine ounces, and comes with a bunch of tools, including two flatheads, two screwdrivers, pair of scissors, needle-nosed pliers and more.

Gerber Folding Saw

Gerber Folding Saw

What should people be looking for when they choose a multi-tool.

Well, you can check out our reviews our knife blog, we review all of our products, and we carry a bunch of multi-tools, but ultimately you want to just do some research,  and pick out something that has all the components you think you’re going to use

What about wilderness tools, such as axes, saws, etc, any advice there?

One product that have that is pretty great is our 13-inch folding saw, which has a double joint, so it actually folds twice, once to hold the blade down and once to protects the blade for safety.  It’s a total of 16 inches long and only weighs 12 ounces and costs about 30 bucks.

It’s great if you’re going to be trailblazing or going in a remote location, it can even be used in place of a machete.

Five Unusual Uses for a Leatherman

There are few things more satisfying in life than using a Leatherman or other multi-tool. Whether you’re cracking open a beer, cutting wire, pulling the hook out of a freshly-caught bass or opening a can, a multi-tool is always there for you: it makes life beautiful.

Yet, the Leatherman has hundreds of uses besides those I’ve listed above.  In fact, the true beauty of owning one of these tools is that you constantly find new and creative uses for it.  With that said, here are five unusual uses for a Leatherman.

Removing a tick from a dog

If you’re out camping with your mutt, there’s a good chance he or she will be crashing through the underbrush, sending birds and squirrels fleeing for cover.  Of course, one organism that isn’t trying to get out of the way is the tick.  If you notice these blood-sucking bugs have infested your pooch’s fur, it’s wise to remove them ASAP.  Grab your multi-tool, pull out the tweezers and yank those ticks away.

Trimming Your Nose Hair

There are two ways to guarantee that you won’t sleep with a woman.  One is to spill an entire pitcher of Busch Light on her and then laugh hysterically, the second is to space out and forget to trim your nose hair.

Nose hair is grosser than gross.  Sure, you can buy a professional nose hair trimmer, but what about when you’re in a pinch and need to be nose hair free immediately.  No worries.  Pull out your friendly multi-tool, unfold the scissors and clip away.

Sawing Off Your Arm

I know it might sound nuts, but the reality is that you may have to saw off your arm some day.  Don’t believe me?  Just scope out this post about Sampson Parker, a farmer who cut his hand off with his pocket knife after it was trapped in a mechanical grain picker that was about to burst into flames.

If your arm is stuck under a rock or in a machine and death is closing in, it might be time to make a serious sacrifice.  If you have your multi-tool in tow, just unfold the saw and go to work.  It’s going to be gruesome, but so will death.
