Knives Save Lives: Man proves you can never have too many knives

While casual knife lovers might have a knife or two lying around the house for practical purposes, hardcore knife enthusiasts can have upwards of 50. So, when they get a new knife for their birthday or Father’s Day, it sometimes gets lost in the shuffle.

However, as one man from Utah found out, that’s not always a bad thing.

Jason Navarro received a knife to add to his growing collection from his wife for Father’s Day, but he simply threw it in his work truck, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. On Monday, that one knife in a collection of many was used to save someone’s life.

A woman named Heidi Orosco was driving down a highway when she accidentally swerved into the wrong lane. When she tried to correct her error, she overcompensated and her car ended up overturned in a ditch.

Navarro and another man, Bob Nicholson, witnessed the crash, so they quickly pulled over to help the trapped woman.

Here’s an excerpt of the account from The Salt Lake Tribune:

Navarro opened the rear passenger door and saw Orosco trapped upside down, held in place by her seatbelt, with her legs trapped under the steering wheel.

Just then, the car began filling with water. Navarro thought a cooler had tipped over, but the car had actually rolled into a drainage ditch, posing even more danger for the trapped driver.

“At the time, we didn’t know she was in a drainage ditch,” Navarro said.

The water filled the car quickly, completely submerging Orosco’s head. Navarro thought fast, running back to his car to grab the knife, with which he intended to cut her loose from the seatbelt.

As Navarro was heading back to help Orosco out of the car, trooper Alex Williams arrived at the scene, took the knife and cut Orosco loose.

She suffered spinal injuries, so she had to be rushed to the hospital, but she is currently in stable condition.

Without the availability of a knife, it’s unlikely Orosco would have escaped in time, especially if the car was quickly filling with water.

This just goes to show that a knife, whether it’s your first or 50th, has the capability to save someone’s life.
