13 Best Automatic Knives in 2024

Despite the legal gray areas, automatic knives — often referred to as switchblades — remain some of the most satisfying and effective knives on the market.

For the uninitiated, an automatic knife opens with the push of a button or switch. If you’re curious about how they differ from assisted-opening knives, we’ve got a deep dive on that, here.

We’ve been steadily rounding up the best knives by brand and category, so it was only a matter of time before we tackled autos.

One quick note: This list does not include out-the-front (OTF) knives. While most OTFs are technically automatics, they’ve carved out their own category — and they have their own dedicated list.

Now, let’s get to it. Here are the best automatic knives right now.

1. Buck 110 Auto

The Buck 110 Folding Hunter is hands-down one of the most legendary folding knives of all time. The only real drawback? It’s not exactly quick to deploy one-handed.

That’s where the Buck 110 Auto comes in.

With a simple press of a button, the classic 3.75-inch clip-point blade snaps open with authority. It stays true to the original with 420HC stainless steel and the reliable lockback mechanism — a combo that delivers rock-solid performance and time-tested durability.

The handle features beautiful Crelicam genuine ebony, complete with brass bolsters and pins, maintaining that iconic look and feel.

Even decades later, the Buck 110 is still a top-tier choice — and the automatic version cranks things up a notch. If you’re looking for upgrades, the Buck 110 Auto Elite steps it up with S30V steel and a G-10 handle. And for something a bit more compact, the Buck 112 Auto is also worth checking out.

2. Kershaw Launch 6

With the Kershaw Launch 15 dropping in 2023, it’s honestly tough to pick just one Launch model for this list — they’re all that good.

But for the sake of variety, we went with the Kershaw Launch 6. This full-sized automatic features a 3.375-inch drop-point blade and a sleek aluminum handle.

Its all-black aesthetic gives it a clean, tactical look that’s hard not to love.

Sure, you might lean more toward the unique styling of the Launch 13 or the compact feel of the Launch 11, but the Launch 6 remains one of the top automatic knives out there – and it was a top seller in 2022 for a reason.

3. Benchmade 9400 Auto Osborne

Just like we could have filled this list with nothing but Kershaw Launch models, we could’ve just as easily packed it with Benchmade autos.

Benchmade has really nailed the automatic game with a lineup that’s both diverse and rock solid.

One standout is the 9400 Auto Osborne — a converted version of the legendary 940 Osborne. This automatic retains everything that made the original a classic: a 3.4-inch reverse tanto blade in premium S30V steel and a green anodized aluminum handle. The big change? Benchmade swapped out the AXIS lock for a push-button automatic mechanism.

It’s the same slim, reliable EDC — now with lightning-fast deployment. You can’t go wrong carrying this one.

4. Gerber 06 Auto

The Gerber 06 Auto may be the oldest knife on this list, but it’s still one of the best.

Originally launched in 2006, the 06 Auto was purpose-built for U.S. service members deployed around the globe. It features a rugged 3.6-inch blade in either a drop-point or tanto shape, crafted from premium S30V stainless steel.

The oversized aluminum handle is designed with gloves in mind, making it a favorite for military and tactical use.

Even after more than 15 years, the 06 Auto holds up like a champ — tough, reliable, and ready for anything. You can check out some of the different 06 Auto variants here.

5. Boker Plus Intention II

Ever since we added the Boker Plus Intention II to the site, it’s been flying off the shelves—and it’s easy to see why.

The design is clean and no-nonsense, but it’s the unbeatable price-to-performance ratio that really makes this knife a standout. You’re getting serious value here.

It sports a 3-inch D2 blade paired with a grippy G-10 handle. It’s not flashy or groundbreaking, but it’s the kind of dependable workhorse you’ll be glad to have on hand when the job gets tough.

It comes in either black or Coyote brown.

6. Kershaw Launch 4

While there is already a Launch on this list, the Kershaw Launch 4 is earns its own spot thanks to how unique it is.

This little auto is legal to carry in California thanks to its sub-2-inch blade, which helped kick off a whole wave of CA-legal automatic knives. Despite the competition, the Launch 4 still holds its ground as one of the best in the category..

It features a 1.9-inch spear point blade and a lightweight aluminum handle. Don’t let the size fool you—this tiny knife packs a surprising punch when it comes to everyday utility.

7. Hogue Ballista I

The Ballista is the newest knife to this list and easily earned a spot as one of our best new knives of 2022.

Originally designed with military use in mind, I’d argue it’s actually one of the most versatile EDC autos out there. It sports a 3.5-inch 154CM stainless steel blade available in either a black or stonewashed finish.

The aluminum handle comes in either matte blue or matte black, with subtle texturing that adds grip without drawing attention. It’s sleek, reliable, and just feels good in hand. As Hogue continues to expand the Ballista lineup, we’re expecting even more greatness to come.

See all the Ballista variations.

8. Benchmade Claymore

The plain-edge Claymore also earned a spot as one of the best knives of 2022 but it’s worth noting the serrated version actually dropped back in 2021. Regardless of which version you go for, the Claymore remains one of the top hard-use automatic knives on the market.

It features a 3.6-inch drop-point blade crafted from tough D2 steel—perfect for demanding tasks. The handle is made from lightweight, textured Grivory and comes in either black or foliage green for a tactical vibe.

A push-button deployment with an integrated safety lock ensures reliable operation while helping to prevent any accidental deployment.

9. Gerber Empower

The Gerber Empower Auto offers a more EDC-friendly design compared to many of the other autos on this list. It features a 3.25-inch drop-point blade made from premium S30V stainless steel and is available in several variations, with the all-black model standing out for its sleek, tactical look.

Armored Grip handle plates over sturdy aluminum scales provide a solid, comfortable feel in hand.

The only drawback is that some users have reported quality control issues, though Gerber has been actively addressing those concerns over time.

10. CobraTec Ryker

CobraTec is an emerging brand that’s been gaining attention for its compelling designs offered at affordable prices. I debated between including the more straightforward CobraTec Diablo or the Ryker, but the Ryker’s unique design ultimately won out.

With a 3.75-inch blade, the Ryker is a generously sized automatic knife that delivers lightning-fast deployment and a highly slicey blade profile—perfect for those who want something a little different without sacrificing performance.

11. SOG-TAC Auto

The SOG-TAC Auto is a modern update of SOG’s earlier automatic TAC models, offering a refreshed design with improved functionality.

This latest version is equipped with the AU-XR lock, a durable, ambidextrous locking mechanism that’s both strong and user-friendly. While there have been some quality control concerns—similar to those with the Gerber Empower—they haven’t been significant enough to keep this solid all-around automatic knife from earning a spot on the list.

12. Benchmade Mediator

The Benchmade Mediator was one of Knife Depot’s best-selling knives of 2022 and it’s easy to see why—it’s a near-perfect automatic EDC with a lot going for it.

While it might not win any beauty contests, the Mediator is essentially a fusion of Benchmade’s top features. It borrows the reverse tanto blade from the 940 Osborne, the lightning-fast deployment of the Infidel, and the lightweight feel of the Bugout.

The 3.3-inch blade is made from premium S90V steel with a black coating, and the black G-10 handle houses a slightly recessed push button for deployment. A built-in safety mechanism ensures the blade won’t deploy accidentally.

13. Kershaw Launch 16

This is the newest addition to the list, and while it’s yet another Kershaw Launch model, the Launch 16 absolutely earns its spot. Many of the Launch knives are versatile EDC options with unique designs tailored to different tastes, but the Launch 16 stands out as one of the most purpose-driven models in the lineup.

The Kershaw Launch 16 is designed for work.

With its ultra-tough M4 steel blade, the Launch 16 already outclasses many other autos when it comes to raw durability. Pair that with a tanto-style blade featuring partial serrations and a rugged aluminum handle, and you get a hard-use folder that easily competes with the likes of the Benchmade Adamas Auto.

Whether you’re looking for a rugged workhorse or a stylish everyday carry, the world of automatic knives has never been more exciting or diverse. From timeless classics like the Buck 110 Auto to cutting-edge performers like the Kershaw Launch 16 and Benchmade Mediator, there’s an auto out there for every style and purpose.

These knives aren’t just about convenience — they’re about reliability, quality craftsmanship, and the satisfaction of knowing your tool is ready at the push of a button.

If you’re looking to add an automatic knife to your collection, this list is a great place to start.

    • Having heard so much about Protech I zeroed in on the tr-5 as checking all the boxes for a robust EDC. Though very expensive it must be popular because finding one for sale was frustrating. While happy with the purchase I found the knife more combat oriented than functional as an EDC. My Kershaw Launch series and Piranha autos are better slicers and more useful in the kitchen or at camp. The Kershaw Launch-1 is even good for batoning kindling and best all-around though it is a handful. Just bought one for my son who is substantially bigger than me. Piranha X suits me better. For carrying in more sophisticated company I prefer Piranha Pocket, Benchmade Bugout or 940 as the Axis lock can not be beat for one hand deployment. Lots of good knives out there, but these are my choices.

  1. Got a pro tech and can’t keep it sharp. Even took it to the place I bought it and dulls fast. Not a fan

    • Most knife makers produce knives with a variety of blade steels -ProTech certainly does. Educate yourself on blade steel properties and then buy knives with blades that exhibit the traits you value. Don’t diss an entire brand because you made an uniformed choice.

    Benchmade Claymore or Gerber 06?

    • Both are good, both have manual safeties if that is your bag. You cannot go wrong with either, however I would lean toward the non serrated claymore due to blade steel , ergonomics, and overall footprint/weight. Have both use claymore more often.

  3. Maybe it should make the list, and maybe it shouldn’t make the list, but as of now my favorite automatic is the Buck Paradigm Shift.
