Self-defense is usually at the lower end of why people carry knives. That’s because most knives aren’t designed for protection like our latest Badass Knife of the Week.
The Spyderco Matriarch 2 is a ferocious knife with an aggressive Reverse-S blade design and lightweight handle scales that’ll leave you ready for anything.
The Matriarch 2 traces its roots back to the Spyderco Civilian. Back in the 1990s, a specialized branch of U.S. law enforcement approached Spyderco to make a knife for their undercover agents. The result was the longer more intimidating Civilian.
When a South African distributor requested a more economical version of the largely self-defense folder, Spyderco created the Matriarch.
Here is a quick video from TheRealKnifeJunkie looking at the knife:
The Matriarch 2 is smaller and lighter than the Civilian, but it’s just as fierce. The 3.55-inch blade is made from quality VG-10 stainless steel and boasts a Reverse S blade profile. This blade design is more effective at self-defense than traditional hawkbill blades and offers better control.
But what bolsters the intimidation factor is the SpyderEdge. Spyderco’s signature serrated design provides one of the most efficient cutting performances of any serrated pattern.
The blade opens via Spyderco’s ambidextrous Round Hole and stays engaged with a sturdy back lock.
Unlike the Civilian, the Matriarch 2 features black FRN handle scales with bi-directional texture to create a strong grip and reduce the weight. The handle construction is borrowed from the popular Endura 4 model.
A four-position pocket clip and skeletonized stainless steel liners only add to the quality and attention to detail seen in the knife.
If you want a knife that’ll open even quicker, pick up the Matriarch 2 with the Emerson Wave Feature.
Don’t find yourself in a bad situation without some recourse. With the Matriarch 2, you know you’ll always be prepared for anything.
