Spyderco Sage 5 – Badass Knife of the Week

The latest Badass Knife of the Week is the culmination of the iconic brand’s efforts to make the best all-around everyday carry knife.

Let’s back up a bit first. When Spyderco first came out with the Sage series of folding knives, they wanted to offer the same EDC-friendly design with different types of locking mechanisms to allow the user to choose which one they like best.

On all the knives in the series, the design is essentially the same. The leaf-shaped blade is 3 inches long, which makes it legal in most places and small enough for easy carry. S30V steel is often overlooked as other, newer steels have entered the market, but the alloy remains one of the best premium steels around.

The handle typically comes in G-10 and carbon fiber composite. This gives the knife a sleek and shiny look while providing texture for the user. Its ergonomic grip is accentuated by a finger choil that allows the user to choke up on the blade for nuanced tasks.

What sets the Spyderco Sage 5 apart from the rest is the use of the Compression Lock. This locking mechanism — which is operated on the spine of the handle — has proven itself a durable and easy-to-use lock that keeps the fingers out of the path of the blade when closing.

When you couple the fact that this design is considered nearly perfect EDC with all the little details like a deep-carry wire pocket clip and 3.1-ounce weight, it’s hard to pick up anything other than this US-made folder.

  1. This knife is not US made. It is made in their Taichung, Taiwan factory which produces very high-quality knives.
