One Gentleman already stated "Call it law breaking, mental health issues, whatever, but the hard and simple fact is that citizens rights to live safely and without fear of attack trumps the right of people who want to carry knives around." Which is a great statement, BUT what if MY idea of living safely against "attack" IS carrying a knife?? We all want to push one agenda, which is usually our own opinion, but we fail to think outside the box and think how others feel about the same issue. I feel "safe" WITH a knife. There usually always are "laws" against certain knives anyway, here in Ca a double knife edge is a felony, which is worse than carrying a loaded gun. Instead of trying to "choke" the law abiding citizens with more "laws" why not carry through with the penalties. Why let a convicted murderer sit in prison appealing a conviction over & over??
Why doesn't anyone push for mandatory sentencing??
And Of course I have the utmost empathy for any victim or families of, I spent 21 years in the Marines, I've seen my "fair share" of death & grief . but taking away a persons "right" to feel safe because you feel the opposite is not fair, and the people who usually make the decisions have NO clue how we live down at our level, because their world is very different from ours...

Why don't we ban metal, it was made of metal, right?
Where do we stop? Is this going to stop people from killing? No! Lets make murder illegal before we have to ban baseball bats, broken glass, all chains and chain products, sharp sticks, razor blades, golf clubs, hammers, axes, ice picks, book ends....
How will we prepare food without knives?
I understand the pain and grief, but making laws in that state of mind never works.

England banned guns a long time ago. Then the English went to knives. After many killings they banned knives. Now English cops do not have guns to stop killers with guns, knives and trucks. And nether do civilians. Take your knife ban and shove it.

I'm not sure a ban will do much for those that want to carry knives around but, I don't understand the opposition to a discussion on it either. Call it law breaking, mental health issues, whatever, but the hard and simple fact is that citizens rights to live safely and without fear of attack trumps the right of people who want to carry knives around. I'm all for having a knife in my pocket. They're useful and fun to collect. I'm not much interested in giving people the right to carry heavy fixed-blade knives around on their belts though anymore than I want to see open carry. It doesn't have a net positive benefit for society. This type of argument is the same reason the NRA is being taken to task now. They're playing a zero sum, reason be damned game with public safety and finally, the public is tired of it and are pushing back. Why wouldn't they? Same here. Carry knives. Use them. Don't flash them around and demand that a 21st century American 'needs' to or has the unalienable right to carry a 10 inch blade with them wherever they go. That's unreasonable and it looks that way to the majority of people out there, including a lot of us who carry and collect knives.
Now, after all that, I'm still not in favor of banning knives. It would be a waste of resources. Ban guns. That might tame the murder rate. Legalize drugs. Interesting social experiment. For the rest of us, use common sense. If you're walking around with a Bowie knife on your belt you're going to look like a paranoid gun nut type. If you need one, great. Carry it and use it. Just don't expect people to be happy that you're hauling around a fighting knife in public.
