6 years late to this clown show but idfc.

Advising someone to never use a knife for self-defense is DUMB. Would a firearm or pepper spray be better? Absolutely. But not everybody has the luxury of being able to concealed carry a pistol with them, now do they? A knife is certainly better than being unarmed and using your bare hands when backed into a corner. At the very least it can make an attacker think twice and it will probably leave him/her with some nasty wounds regardless of the confrontation’s outcome.

Your long-winded disclaimer almost implies that it’s better to just let your aggressor have his way with you, even with a sharp blade in your pocket. Sounds like something that would be uttered in the regulation-addled UK. Have fun with that and let us know how that goes for you. Better carry some lube and some extra $20 bills to hand to your attacker pal!

Gee, I have carried knives dacades and the only one I own that makes me nervious is the Spyderco Matriarch 2.

It's a excellent knife but it's is scary sharp, treat it with respect. Nicked myself once with it, don't want to do that again

"Using a knife for self-defense is a bad idea." May be true. However, I have had extensive travels in foreign countries - like Red China, Iran, Afghanistan, Bulgaria. Sometimes, you don't have a choice because a better tool is not available. A good, all around knife is the Buck 110 because it can be used as a yawara stick without opening. Otherwise, an inexpensive folder packed in a suitcase (and vulnerable to theft by TSA or foreign baggage inspectors) is an option. Just make sure it is legal for your destination, of course. I would also like to carry a goodsize Leatherman tool. By the way, I carried 5 folders when in Afghanistan and my late wife carried 3.
